PHD POSITION IN PHYSICS (BIONANOTECHNOLOGY)

The Department of Physics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces a PhD
fellowship in the field of bionanotechnology. The project is financed by NTNU Nanolab
(http://www.ntnu.no/nanolab/). Applicants are invited for a 4-year PhD position with 25% duties,
usually laboratory teaching at the Department of Physics.

For living organisms, fabrication of complex 3D structures on the nm length scale is a common
and what appears to be a remarkable easy task. Utilisation of precisely designed and fabricated
nanostructures is essential for all living organisms. The focus of the PhD candidate work will be on
characterisation of natural, chitin based nanostructured materials. Experimental techniques will
include a range of characterisation tools, like optical, electron and atomic force microscopy, X-ray
diffraction, image analysis.

Potential areas of application for characterised materials, for example as template in
fabrication of inorganic nanostructures will be investigated. The knowledge from the characterisation stage
of the project will be used to describe principles used by nature to design mechanically strong
composite materials made of components with the dimensions in the nm-scale.

We seek highly motivated individuals holding master degrees in physics, material science,
chemistry or other relevant discipline. The candidate will work in a rich scientific environment and
benefit from a strong and multidisciplinary training. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact
Pawel Sikorski (pawel.sikorski@phys.ntnu.no; phone: +47 73598393) for further information.

The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to national guidelines for appointment
of PhD fellows at universities and university colleges. The appointment will be made according to
the general regulations regarding university employees. The government work force of Norway should
reflect the diversity of the population, and this is an ’Equal Opportunities position’.

The annual salary of the PhD position is NOK 292.000 (code 1017, level 39 according to the
government pay-scale for university employees). Two per cent of the salary will be deducted at source
as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian State Pension Fund. Applicants are obliged to engage on
an organised PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the the applicant's plan
for a PhD (dr.scient) study. A contract regarding the period of appointment and the obligations of
the PhD fellow must be signed by the Fellow and the University.

The application should include information of education, exams and relevant experience.
Certified copies of certificates and other documents should be enclosed. Publications and other scientific
material that the applicant wants to be considered should be enclosed. Multi -authored
publications will be considered but, in cases where the impact of the applicant on the publication is not
evident, a brief description of the role of the applicant in the work should be enclosed.

Within the application deadline, applicants should submit: - the application (in English) - a CV
(in English) - certified copies of certificates of education and other relevant documents – two
referees with e-mail addresses and phone number. Applications should be sent to Faculty of Natural
Sciences and Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7491Trondheim, Norway.
Please indicate the fellowship reference number NT- 60/05 on the application. Application deadline:
January 15, 2006.
