The Faculty of Medicine is offering a number of 3 -year and 4-year fully funded PhD Studentships with attractive stipends, to start in October 2006.

Research in the Faculty of Medicine is enabled by world-class expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics and genomics, and takes place in departments rated 5 and 5* in the last RAE.

All students will belong to the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine which provides a full programme of training in research and transferable skills.

Research projects are available in the Faculty's 8 strategic themes:

Cancer - molecular basis of cancer; cell signalling; drug resistance; tumour suppressor gene function and cloning; molecular epidemiology.

Endocrine & Metabolism - brain pathways controlling energy expenditure and appetite; biochemistry of basic human drives; obesity.

Heart & Lung - multidisciplinary approaches to address common diseases such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, atherosclerosis and heart failure.

Infection - infection by bacteria, viruses and parasites; immune responses; infectious disease epidemiology.

Inflammation & Immunity - molecular and cellular mechanisms of immunity; immunological basis and therapeutic intervention in inflammation, graft rejection and autoimmunity; tumour immunology and therapy.

Neuroscience - neurological and psychiatric diseases; systems neuroscience; mental health.

Public & International Health - patterns and causes of disease; impact of disease intervention in developed and developing countries.
