PhD Studentships
Writing about stressful experiences to reduce symptoms in patients with respiratory problems
Brighton & Sussex Medical School

The newly opened Brighton and Sussex Medical School is committed to providing undergraduate and postgraduate training which links clinical medicine to basic science and research. The school is developing a research focus in the fields of Infectious diseases, Immunity, International Health, Neuromuscular Biology and Primary care, and has established internationally recognised research groups in each of these areas. Four prestigious three year fully funded PhD studentships are available. The projects offered will involve collaboration with
non-clinical and clinical colleagues and will enable the chosen students to gain competence in a wide range of conventional and contemporary research skills, whilst working in an exciting and
challenging field.

Project 1: Writing about stressful experiences to reduce symptoms in patients with respiratory problems

Writing about emotional experiences appears to have surprisingly beneficial effects on health and well-being. This PhD studentship is based around a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of expressive writing for patients with asthma and will provide training in epidemiological, psychological and health services research methods.

Supervisors: Prof Helen Smith Chair of Primary Care, BSMS
