Great Western Research has created 130 funded postgraduate research studentships based at Universities across South West England. The studentships are co-funded by the South West of England Regional Development Agency and the region's businesses and universities, ensuring there are exciting opportunities to make a real contribution to research and prosperity in the region.

Over 50 are available now across five research themes, and up to 80 more will be available in the autumn. They represent an opportunity for students to undertake high profile research projects, build links with business and become part of a high profile network of researchers in South West England.

The examples shown below are real projects, available now for October 2006 start.

Applied Mathematics
Numerical Methods for Weather and Climate Models with the Met
Office, supervised by the Universities of Exeter and Bath.

Sustainability
The Potential Contribution of Utility and Leisure Cycling to the Sustainable Development of Integrated Transport and Tourism in the South West with First Great Western, supervised by the Universities of West of England and Bournemouth.

Great Western Research is a ground-breaking �14 million partnership of the 14 higher education institutions in South West England, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, HEFCE and regional businesses.

Psychology
Impact of Diving on Cognitive Function with the Diving Diseases
Research Centre, supervised by the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter.

Creative Arts
Animator controlled behaviour modelling with 422 Ltd, supervised by the Universities of Bournemouth and Bath.

Great Western Research studentships are jointly supervised by leading academics from at least two universities and part-funded by at least one industry partner.
