Wellstone Fellowship 2006-2007

Wellstone Fellowship 2006-2007
“If we don’t fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don’t really stand for them.”
- Paul Wellstone

THE WELLSTONE FELLOWSHIP
FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION: Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights is now accepting applications for
the Wellstone Fellowship, a position created to honor the work and legacy of the late Paul and Sheila Wellstone. The Wellstones were committed advocates for human rights and great friends and supporters of Minnesota Advocates.
To honor their memory and help preserve the legacy of Paul’s and Sheila’s work, we have created The Wellstone Fellowship program at Minnesota Advocates. By instituting this fellowship program, we hope to increase the cadre of talented professionals in our community working to promote and protect human rights. For 2006-2007, the Wellstone Fellowship will provide a recent law school graduate, or lawyer pursuing a new course of his or her career, to work for a year in human rights.
Just as the Wellstones themselves pursued a wide and varied human rights agenda, the Wellstone Fellow will work on a variety of Minnesota Advocates' projects related to emerging U.S. and international human rights issues. The Wellstone Fellow will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the human rights field through fact-finding, research, education and advocacy. Because the Wellstone Fellow works on projects related to emerging issues, the projects that the 2006-2007
Fellow will be working on will not be finalized until January 2006.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: The ideal candidate for this year’s fellowship will be an attorney or will have a J.D. by the start of the fellowship. Candidates must possess solid organizational and
communication skills, have familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, be comfortable working with diverse groups of people, and have an interest in human rights, social justice and international affairs. Proficiency in a foreign language is desirable.
TERMS: This is a full-time one-year position beginning in August or September of 2006 (although there is some flexibity as to start date). The Fellow will be compensated as an entry-level Minnesota Advocates staff attorney. Benefits include an excellent vacation plan and medical/dental insurance.
APPLICATION INFORMATION: Applications must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2005. No email or telephone calls please. Applicants should highlight their specific experience and interests rather than trying to tailor the application to a specific area of Minnesota Advocates work.
Please submit a resume, writing sample and cover letter indicating why you are applying for the
Wellstone Fellowship to:
