PhD Studentship in Engineering - University of Liverpool #1

PhD Studentship Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods for Water Flows
Maritime Engineering and Water Systems (MEWS) Research Group

*Project Description:* A PhD studentship is available in the Maritime
Engineering and Water Systems (MEWS) Research group to a candidate with a
first class or upper second class or equivalent degree in science or
engineering. The project can be either a pre-defined or self-motivated topic
in the broad area of Mathematical Models and Numerical Methods, e.g.,
Computational Fluids/Coastal/River Dynamics, Sediment Transport and
Hydraulics for engineering. Very diverse research themes with a good track
record are available for a suitable PhD candidate. These include modern
numerical techniques (lattice Boltzmann methods), high-resolution Riemann
solver (e.g. Surface Gradient Method for shallow water equations), Cartesian
cut-cell method (a simple approach to complicated geometries) and
pressure-correction methods (SIMPLE, SIMPLER and SIMPLC). The project will
involve development and application of one of these novel computational
models/methods or others to problems relating to engineering water flows.
Candidates must have a good knowledge of fluid
mechanics/hydraulics/hydrodynamics. Knowledge/experience in one of the major
programming languages like FORTRAN90 and C++ is preferred but not essential.
The research produced from the project is likely to offer benefits to a wide
range of applications in hydraulic, coastal and environmental engineering.
The successful applicant will have a unique opportunity to join one of the
UK's leading engineering departments and benefit from interaction with other
leading researchers.

Applicants must have a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree or
equivalent.

This studentship is open to International applicants who may apply for a
University Studentship and to Home/EU residents who may also apply for an
EPSRC DTA award (see www.epsrc.ac.uk for eligibility criteria).
