The Maxwell Institute Full Support for PhD Studies in Mathematical Sciences, UK

The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences has three ERP Prize
Scholarships for PhD studies in the mathematical sciences. Each provides
full fees and an annual maintenance grant of 12,500, for three years
starting in October 2006. They are open to students of any nationality.

Applicants should have, or be confident of obtaining, an undergraduate or
Masters degree in an appropriate area of mathematical science, of a standard
at least equivalent to a First Class Honours degree of a UK university. The
Maxwell Institute aims to attract the most talented applicants from around
the world and will use a highly competitive selection procedure, making
these awards among the most prestigious in any mathematics research
institute.

One studentship is available specifically in the area of quantitative
financial risk management, under the supervision of Professor Alexander
McNeil. A variety of topics in areas such as market risk, applied
econometrics, credit risk, or the modelling of dependent or extreme risks
are possible, depending on the interests and background of the candidate,
who should have a good knowledge of applied probability and statistics.

Two studentships are available in any area of mathematical science.
Interested applicants are advised to consult the website of the Maxwell
Institute where there are links to the three
departments within the Institute (School of Mathematics, University of
Edinburgh; Department of Mathematics, Heriot-Watt University; and Department
of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics, Heriot-Watt University). Details of
staff and research groups are listed there.
