database administrator area to be a SQL Server Database Administrator
in our client company.

0002/ID/SQLDBA - SQL Server DBA
Mandatory skills - SQL Server Specific:
- 3 years working experience in SQL Server database administration.
- For the 3 years working experience in SQL Server, at least 2 years
must have been with one company or project, with significant database
administrator responsibilities and contributions.
- The database working experience must be the most recent working
experience of the candidate. Banking Domain preferable.
- Good experience in maintaining IIS Web Servers.
- Excellent in Win2000/Win2003
- At least 2 years practical experience in NT4.0/Windows200x
administration, Win 2003 would be an advantage.
- Understanding of how to administer SQL Server systems through
enterprise manager, knowledge of SQL Server agent and jobs.
- Understand how the stop and restart SQL Server, and troubleshoot
any start-up issues. Good understanding of SQL Server Storage
Subsystem Layouts, and navigation.
- Understand the methods of database backup and restore, full
differential, and log backups, and show practical experience.
- Analytical problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
- Service oriented behavior and communication to internal and
external contacts
- Good communication skills (communication to customers verbal and
written is mandatory)
- Fluent in English
- At least 2 years practical experience in managing IT infrastructure
related incidents and problems.
- Good understanding of high availability environments, and
associated technologies
- Willing to work in shifts
- Ability to work in shifts for 24x7 coverage, may be required to
work outside usual shift hours when there is urgent work to be performed.
Desired skills:
- Microsoft certified database administrator (SQL Server database) -
preferred.
- Knowledge of Clear Quest is a plus
Job responsibilities:
- Able to describe and explain database architecture (SQL Server).
- Understanding of database storage layout, able to locate all
relevant database files on server without relying on documentation,
able to add space to the relevant areas of the database when
necessary and understand impact of actions, able to manage capacity
of filesystems containing archive logs and manually trigger archive
log backups (including redirecting backup destinations) when
necessary. Able to identify used and unused storage (logical and
physical) on server, suitable filesystems for different types of
database files.
- Starting and stopping of databases, including troubleshooting
startup and shutdown problems, also coordinating startup and shutdown
of databases with related application software and other interfacing
systems, etc. Able to develop scripts for starting and stopping of databases.
- Backups and restores of databases, different types of database
backups and restores, different types of database files to backup and
restore, different recovery scenarios. Working experience in at least
one third-party database backup and restore tool. Able to setup
backups, configure backups (change backup configuration, parameters,
etc.), troubleshoot escalated backup and restore problems. Able to
develop scripts for backups and restores.
- Working experience in database client-server configurations,
troubleshoot database connectivity problems with users, other
applications, interfaces, etc.
- Troubleshooting performance problems on any server (which may or
may not be due to database problems alone), able to identify server
resources experiencing bottlenecks e.g. cpu, memory, disk, network,
etc., able to profile performance problem to determine bottleneck
area, able to recommend database parameter changes and implement
changes via the customer's change management process. Working
experience in at least one performance troubleshooting / capacity
management tool.
- Performing routine database administration tasks, either manually
or via scripts, tools, etc. Able to develop scripts to automate
routine database administration tasks.
- Database security, including checking of vendor database security
alerts, implementing patches and other fixes recommended by vendors
to address security issues, including planning and scheduling of
patches and downtime on all supported databases.
- Working experience in Microsoft Windows Server system
administration, able to perform most system administration tasks
without assistance, for engineers focusing on SQL Server.
- Good understanding of and working experience in database user
administration, e.g. users, roles, privileges, etc.
- Good understanding of and working experience in managing database
tables, indexes, constraints, triggers, stored procedures, etc.,
including working with application developers on database design,
providing advice and recommendations when necessary.
- Ability to create databases based on requests from customers,
providing advice and recommendations when necessary in order to use
available computing resources (cpu, memory, disk, network) optimally.
- Ability to maintain accurate configuration database of supported
databases at all times, including (but not limited to) the following
information, e.g. database product, components, versions, patches,
servers, operating systems, support information, contact information, etc.
- Working experience in SQL Server and replication - preferred.
- Working experience in Microsoft Windows Server system
administration, able to perform most system administration tasks
without assistance, for engineers focusing on SQL Server.
- Working experience in starting and stopping clusters in Windows
Server environments, including troubleshooting problems with clusters
- preferred.
