Information on Australian Scholarships

Australian Scholarships

On 26 April, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs announced a doubling of scholarship
numbers (to 19,000) to the Asia Pacific region by 2010. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS),
managed by AusAID and the Endeavour Awards, managed by DEST, have been brought together under the
umbrella of Australian Scholarships, in a whole of government approach to education cooperation
between Australia and the countries of the Asia Pacific region. In addition, a new regional
scholarship and training program for future leaders, the Australian Leadership Awards, has been
established under the Australian Scholarships umbrella.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALAs)
ALAs have two components Scholarships and Fellowships. Both programs are designed to promote
leadership within the Asia Pacific region by helping existing and emerging leaders develop their
skills, knowledge and networks. The scholarships cover longer term study in Australia at the
Masters and Doctoral level and applications are open from now until 31 July. AusAID is in the process
of designing the Fellowship component, which will provide more flexible short term study
opportunities. It is anticipated that applications for Fellowships will open in August.

Management of the ALA application and selection process will be done by AusAID in Canberra.
