Ph.D/ Doktorand/ Postdoc: Google Library Project at IUPR, Germany

Ph.D. / Doktorand / Postdoc: Google Library Project
Conduct research in the hottest topics in pattern recognition and
machine learning.
http://www.iupr.org

The Image Understanding and Pattern Recognition (IUPR) research
group at the DFKI is developing the next generation system for
Google's massive book scanning project. Potential thesis and
research topics fall into the areas:

adaptive pattern recognition methods
classifier combination
active machine learning
visual object recognition
adaptive statistical natural language modeling
Bayesian methods
geometric algorithms
statistical geometry
document layout analysis
2D statistical parsing
image processing
texture analysis
document and image compression
user interfaces for large-scale visualization of geometric
relationships and/or pattern recognition results

The system will incorporate state-of-the-art pattern recognition,
statistical natural language processing, and image processing
methods. The resulting system will be deployed by Google in the
field, and it will also be released in open source form as a system
for both desktop OCR and high volume conversion efforts.

We are looking for a few individuals passionate about pattern
recognition, machine learning, algorithms, and open source software
development to join our group. Please apply to the IUPR research
lab for a doctoral, postdoctoral, or staff position.

Successful Ph.D. students may have additional opportunities for
internships and jobs at Google.

Ph.D. Positions

The Image Understanding and Pattern Recognition (IUPR) research
group at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence
(DFKI GmbH) has several positions available.

Topics include

document analysis
pattern recognition
statistical machine learning methods
multimedia databases
geometric matching
visual object recognition
optical character recognition
document layout analysis
image processing

The research positions also provide the opportunity for completing a
doctoral dissertation at the University of Kaiserslautern. Because
the IUPR group is in close cooperation with many international
research facilities, internships in the USA and several European
countries can be arranged and supported.

Applicants should have a background in computer science,
mathematics, statistics, pattern recognition, signal or image
processing, and/or human computer interaction.

Please see our application procedure:
http://www.iupr.org/application_procedure
for information about applying to IUPR.
