MPhil/PhD Studentship in Theology - University of Exeter

MPhil/PhD studentship
Department of Theology

The Department of Theology intends to award a PhD studentship to begin
in the academic year 2006-7, amounting to the cost of fees (at the
Home/EU rate of 3,240 for 2006/7) plus 6,000 maintenance, for three
years. The holder of the studentship may be required to undertake some
teaching duties or to provide research or administrative support for
the department as a condition of his/her award.

The Department of Theology is part of the School of Humanities and
Social Sciences (incorporating the Institute of Arabic and Islamic
Studies). It is a lively and growing department, which achieved a 5A
rating in the RAE of 2001. Members of staff teach and research in a
wide variety of areas: Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Patristics,
Historical Theology, Systematic Theology, Theological Ethics, Theology
and Public Issues, Philosophy of Religion, and Science and Religion.
We have particular strengths in:

 social-scientific, ideological and anthropological interpretation of
the Bible;
 biblical hermeneutics, contemporary theological, ethical and
political biblical interpretation, and Scriptural Reasoning;
 the history of Christian doctrine, its contemporary appropriation
and interpretation, and post-liberal accounts of its nature and
significance;
 contemporary Christian theology in political, economic and cultural
engagement;
 philosophical analysis of the practices, attitudes and experiences
that sustain and constitute faith.

Details of the research interests for individual staff members can be
accessed at http://www.huss.ex.ac.uk/theology/staff.htm. We welcome
applications in all areas of theology and biblical studies, but will
take into account when awarding the bursary the fit between the
applicant's proposal and existing staff research interests.

The scholarships are open to both UK/EU citizens as well as citizens
applying from outside the EU. Should an award be given to a non-EU
citizen, then note that fees will only be reimbursed at the EU rate
(leaving a shortfall of 5,520). Successful overseas applicants will
need to make up the fee difference through either an award given by
their home country, or alternative sources, or personal funds.

Criteria for the MPhil/PhD Studentships

 Academic excellence.
 Research potential.
 Connection with existing research interests in the Department (see
the website for further information).
 Capacity to perform Departmental duties (mainly teaching, but not
exclusively) as required by the awards.

Application for MPhil/PhD Awards

 All applications for admission to the MPhil/PhD programme in
Theology at Exeter received prior to 16 July 2006 will be considered
for these awards. Please note that you do not have to fill in a
separate application form to be considered. Candidates should,
however, send notification of their wish to be considered to Dr.
Alastair Logan, the Director of Postgraduate Studies, by the same date
(email: a.h.b.logan@exeter.ac.uk).
 The Department will draw up a shortlist, in the knowledge that some
may be awarded other prestigious funded scholarships (e.g., from the
AHRC).
 We would aim to inform our selected candidate by 30 July 2006.
 Note that, if our selected candidate withdraws or secures funding
from another source, the award will be offered to the candidate who is
placed next on our shortlist. We will do our best to keep short-
listed candidates informed as to the likelihood of them receiving an
award.
 Awards are for full-time study only.
 The Department may decide to interview candidates for these awards
as part of its selection process.
 Candidates may be required to apply for an AHRC award in order to be
considered eligible for a Departmental studentship. We will inform
candidates if this is indeed the case.

Closing date for applications is 16 July 2006.
