PhD Studentship
Railway Safety Risk Research Project
Department of Civil Engineering

This 3-year fully funded studentship is available from 1st August
2006. The research will investigate current railway safety risk
assessment techniques, develop safety and risk models to facilitate
railway safety analysis using fuzzy reasoning and analytical hierarchy
process (AHP) methods, develop advanced procedures of rail design and
maintenance to minimise risks, determine the accuracy of the safety
analysis methodology and determine if there are significant benefits
to be gained. A software railway safety predication tool will be
developed in this research. Therefore, potential candidates with a
minimum 2:1 class in Engineering/Computer Science disciplines and good
computer programming and software development skills (Visual C/C++)
are strongly encouraged to apply.

This research is being supported by London Underground Ltd, Tube Lines
Ltd and Metronet SSL and the student will spend some time at the
company for safety risk data and information collection as part of the
research. The study is under the supervision of Dr Min An and
Professor Chris Baker.

The studentship is open to UK and overseas students and includes
